I like it too, the new forum category is much needed.

And the news thing is good... But do you guys have it in you to consistantly have stuff ready to fill up multiple layers of news?

If you refresh the forum homepage, you'll notice the news in the right hand corner change (only between three things at this point, but better than one)

... I have (finally) reached the rank of Eclipse in Halo: Reach. I think it is safe to assume that this will be the last rank I reach in this game, at least until Halo 4's release date.

Post by: DangerousDave on May 07, 2012, 02:34:40 AM
I think I might get to Field Marshall by the time Halo 4 rolls around. It's surprising how the player incentives in Reach aren't that great for me, though. The ranks feel meaningless after a point, I've got everything I want in the armory, and the commendations scale so dramatically that there's no hope I'll be able to max the majority. I kind of feel like they need to be attainable goals for normal players rather than just for those who play incessantly--or maybe just different kinds of rewards for different players.

Couldn't agree more Dave. I couldn't tell you how long I've been stuck on the Noble rank; I just didn't feel there was any incentive to get to the next one.

I've barely played a handful of live Reach matches. Really dislike this trend towards 'play a bajillion MP matches if you want this camera for the side of your helmet' nonsense.
Title: Re: Random Post!
Post by: DangerousDave on May 07, 2012, 11:52:54 AM
Well for the most part the good armor is easy to access. Unless you want the massively ugly GUNGNIR variant or the Haunted Helmet (where you need to have purchased every other helmet and be Inheritor) most of the stuff you get by the time you reach Brigadier. I got my Mark V helmet and all the accoutrements to make my Spartan look as close to Master Chief as I can... the only other helmet I might buy is the Mark VI for the hell of it.

The problem with armor unlocks as a carrot was that a lot of the armor perms just didn't look good (because they weren't armor permutations, really, they were add-ons, so I don't have a lot of pieces on my Spartan because I hate how bulky they made them look in Reach.) So after four months of play I have everything I want.

They also really need to make the investment system matter more in campaign. The fact that you get far fewer credits for completing *harder* games in Campaign and Firefight (like Classic, for instance) doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I see why they would limit custom challenge payouts to prevent shenanigans, but it still seems like a weak system all around.*

*Actually, it probably worked fine in the beta environment, just not so much in the final game.

Haha, im like, such a low rank in reach i dont even know. But its pretty bad. I have no desire to rank up, or really gain any of the rewards. But i suppose thats what they are trying to change with H4...

But dave, honestly, you have the weirdest opinions when it comes to armor perms: You dont like your spartan looking bulky? Like seriiously, I just bought whatever armor perm made him look the biggest...

*I like this edtition of "EVERYBODY CLAM DOWN" :D

Well, to clarify.

I've always considered the Spartans more lithe than bulk on their own. They are strong, for sure, but I'd think their athleticism would be more visible (I think we've tilled this ground previously)--think of a kickboxer or MMA over American wrestling or weightlifting. A lot of their bulk comes from the armor itself--taking what I assume are average height or above-average heights and pushing it past 7 feet. The Mark V in Combat Evolved certainly is bulky, and it's my favorite armor.

The armor in Reach, however, didn't make sense canonically. We've heard for years about how the Spartans look alike, and from a war production standpoint all the variants actually being fielded by a grand total of two or three Spartans is laughable. Secondly, the idea of modular components for the MJOLNIR doesn't make much sense because of the suit's integration. Unsurprisngly, most of the armory items really only add armor or pouches--they don't appeal to me because they feel (and are) slapped-on, instead of deliberately designed elements. If you take a look at all the chest pieces, for example, they are all built on the same Mk V-B chassis, as it were, with no clear benefits beyond more pouches and perhaps slightly more metal.

My idea of an armor system would have been to differentiate the already existing classes, and make it clear that a lot of the tangental equipment was stuff never actually fielded.

(Which, in turn, would have led me to redesign Noble Team as more conventional Mk V troops. That might be a fun drawing idea, actually.)

Good points dave

But your points dont necessarily agree. You say that there rare too many armor perms and they are all supposed to look alike, but then you say that the armor perms arent different enough, and that they are just slight variants on one theme.

And also, am i wrong to assume that you are basing the whole "they are all canonically supposed to look the same" standpoint from the parts in Fall of Reach?

It seems that the slight variant thing would make more sense. Throughout the years of fighting, for the spartans themselves to grab some more pouches of ammo, and then integrate it into their armor.
What if, it isnt that the helmets are designed to have all those extra components. Rather, while working into the feild, all these super intelligent spartans made some modifications to their armor, and wired in a new scope thingy onto their helmet.

And most of the armors (available from the armory--not the ones on noble team) were canonically just prototypes, and would never have found there way into active duty
Title: Re: Random Post!
Post by: DangerousDave on May 07, 2012, 01:04:46 PM
I meant that I thought the campaign armor should have been more similar* and the multiplayer would allow more leeway after choosing a more integrated and differentiated class set. So you could choose the Mark V and then make more incremental changes, or choose the EVA piece, which would look fundamentally different. That way armor unlocks aren't just more pieces that get tacked on, although some could be--as you say, building off their standard kit.

I think actually there's an element Bungie missed with Noble Team... I'll definitely have to write up my thoughts in more detail, with pictures mayhaps Thanks for the inspiration. :)
Title: Re: Random Post!

So you want to apply the same philosophy they used with the helmets, to the rest of the armpr?
Title: Re: Random Post!
Post by: Sixftunder on May 07, 2012, 02:23:03 PM
Lets not forget that Spartans are not only the strongest of our species, but also very intelligent. When the Spartan II's are first given their armor, they have to have a team of people put it on them. Later, we find that with time, the Spartans were able to learn how to take at least pieces of the armor off themselves and repair them as necessary (I think it is described in more than one book).

When Halsey asks George what he did to her armor, he replies "I made a few modifications". So yes, I think that canonically it fits, at least for George. I see what Dave means as far as the other members of Noble team.

Some people in multiplayer looks like they've covered themselves in glue and then jumped into a scrap heap. And when people have massive heavy armour and then sniper rounds on both shoulders... god it annoys me. So you're a bulky... heavy weapons... stealthy... sniper?

WTF is 17/1 supposed to be? :-p

Convince me how DD/MM is a better format. In listening.

It makes more sense to have the units arranged in order of size.

You can consider DD to be an nominal adjective describing MM, and MM to be a nominal adjective describing YYYY.
TT (time) could be considered as a nominal adjective describing DD.
This makes the logical format TT/DD/MM/YY.
[this doesn't work with hours minutes and seconds because they do not describe each other. Seconds and minutes count up towards the next increment, rather than describing the current one.]

I like the imperial dating system from WH40K: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Imperial_Dating_System (http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Imperial_Dating_System) Which would be quite useful in Halo thanks to the time shenanigans of Slipspace.

For example 7723552.M03 is when the Pillar of Autumn discovered the first Halo.

Also no points.

On steam I've created multiple category "stacks" of games I'm not gonna play; like in levels of priority that I'm not going to play them: like I have:
"Games I'm not going to play"  -- Meaning I'm definitely never going to play them
"Games  I should play" -- Meaning I'm never going to play them; but I'll feel bad about it.
And just "Games" -- which are games that I plan to play, but in reality, most of them will just be sorted into one of the above categories

I don't feel like the ranking system in Dota 2 is broken, but I do feel worse for some reason when we lose due to identifiable issues. I mean, there's always feeders in Halo, for instance, but even if we lose because of one bad teammate I don't get as irked as when the same thing happens in Dota. I'm not really sure why.

On unrelated games front, Six, I finished Deadlight. It started out okay but I was just trying to get the damn thing over with by the end. It's got a very nice art style but the platforming got increasingly bad, the voice acting was atrocious, and I felt like I'd seen the plot before a thousand times even though I stay away from The Walking Dead or anything zombie-related.

Maybe its the genre, maybe its the reward system, but mobas seem to put more weight on game outcomes rather than game content. In Halo I don't mind if I lose if I get an awesome run in a vehicle, or a couple of spectacular kills. I think snowballing may be a part of it as well. And specific roles that must be played, without which there is no chance.

I've played dozens of Halo matches where a shorthanded team has won.

Maybe played 2 in league of legends.

Leavers and trolls are a massive problem in LoL, and their behaviour directly impacts YOUR ranked performance, which is immensely frustrating.

I think you hit a good point on outcomes. I dunno about LoL but I think Dota is actually pretty good about snowballing. Everyone decries feeds, but assuming you have decent teamwork and make it to the late game you can still have close matches. It's hard to stomp the other team 2-1 but crush them early. And the nature of carry heroes means that even an underperforming team has a shot.

What I think is really interesting about Dota 2 is the fact that it shows how lucrative free-to-play is. It boggles my mind when people on NeoGAF admit they've spent nearly $800 on in-game cosmetics.

I've bought... a dinosaur, for my 360 avatar, with points from completing surveys.

Skyrim is one of those games through which I learned a lot about my temperament as a gamer. Disregarding the game-breaking glitches, it's a lot of fun and really does sell itself as a realized world that you can set out and do your own thing in. However I realized that I am more interested in a game where I feel like I can actually complete it, and would rather have fewer but more consequential quests than "Oh, Go to [Location X], defeat the boss [Y] and reclaim [Z] from there and bring it back" that form the backbone of the radiant quest system.

So it was fun, but not my cuppa' in that I didn't spend hours lost in the world like some people.

(In order to 100% the game I was forced to break out of one town's invisible walls and clip underneath its geometry in order to find a quest-required NPC who was waiting to talk to me thirty feet underneath the neighboring hillside.)

Capac; you should get Dark Souls II. That game is fantastic!

Or Child Of Light, that game is fantastic too.

(incidentally; I don't think I have any of your steam accounts; my name is TarAlacrin on steam; send me a request)

The reason I don't play moba's is basically cause I've already done it. I played a moba a bunch once, and now I'm done with the genre (at least till heroes of the storm comes out)  because I feel like there is less to be learned from just playing the game over and over.
Also, cause something about moba's as they stand right now just creates a horrible community around them (ergo, all your posts about how mad playing the game makes you)

I kind of agree about MOBAs, in that in Dota I am just playing the same map over and over... but every time I get burned out about that I go back to it fairly quickly :P

Heroes of the Storm just feels like it's three or four years too late at this point...

Says the man who is in the middle of talking about how he can't get enough of Dota...

Idk, I feel like the dudes who made the original Dota mod struck gold, but they weren't actually good designers, I feel like they just got lucky; and as a result, they have been too afraid to change anything so we're stuck with the same game not evolving and bettering itself, just throwing more and more characters on the fire.

Thats why I'm excited for Heroes of the Storm; cause I think Blizzard actually sat down and thought about every piece of design and tried to improve it.

Fair enough; but I'm not sure the formula is the issue given the massive popularity of LoL and DoTA and the fact that no challenger has risen to usurp it (Demigod, Smite, HoN)

Meh; I think that most of those games fell into the same traps as the originals, since they are mostly just direct copies with different powers or camera views.
Also, I don't think any game, no matter how good, without a major marketing budget behind it would be able to succeed given the rabidness of the fan-bases behind those two games.

I'm kinda tempted by Dawngate. It has some very interesting twists on the game, and the meta...

But its published by EA so NOPE.
