Title: Suggestions
Post by: Slightly Live on January 04, 2012, 01:01:44 PM
Going to open the doors to suggestions here. If there's anything you'd like to see on the site please let us know. We can't guarantee that we'll do an article on any given subject but we're definitely up for looking seriously at any and all suggestions.

I wouldnt mind seeing an article or something that analysed the states of all the seperate covenent factions and races now that they have been split asunder. And some speculation on further possibilities

Eh. I wouldnt mind, it would also give the community a way to contribute through the little chatbox thingys

<< Oh and some kind of avatar scaler for the forums. :P

Well, we could also edit them after the fact for the podcast. But that's a matter for Dani :)

I also wouldn't mind a live streaming. And I am also having trouble finding an avatar picture. Any suggestions on where to find some Halo related pictures that are the right size?

Google and then resize in Photoshop is what I usually do. I'd be happy to resize any images if needed.

Can you add a default avatar gallery to the forums? I did find it a process of trial-and-error to see what dimensions would fit.

I'll have a look and see if it's possible.

what are the dimensions for our avatar picture?
Title: Re: Suggestions
Post by: Slightly Live on January 06, 2012, 09:23:34 PM
150x90

I'll see if there's a way to hardcode the limit too to make sure folks can't accidentally go over the limit.

OK. Two things done. I've fixed the avatar restrictions. It's not set at a maximum of 90px width and 150px height.

I've also added an avatar gallery if you don't want to go to the bother of fixing one up yourself. There's a grand total of 2 avatars there right now and I shamelessly just stole them from the Waypoint forums. I'll add more in time for sure.

Hey, this isnt really a suggestion, but:
I just noticed the main site's background... With the Halo 4 object... It looks really cool on the site... Just wanted to say good job whoever found and positioned that picture... Cause it looks sweet...

Just wanted to second this notion; I love the "wake up John" pic and have it as my background on my laptop, iPad and phone. Hope that's not considered over board. Very well done! I like how you reversed the beam to go down the margin on the left hand side.

Thanks! =)

We're ironing out the bugs from the new coat of paint on the main site but we're glad you guys like. A nice chap came to us with the idea and it was awesome so we're glad it's worked out.

Could you add a link to the actual homepage of FUD from the forums page? It would just make it a little easier for someone as lazy as myself, rather than typing it in :p

Title: Re: Suggestions

I had a suggestin for a possible article idea or just something to think about:
I would love to hear more about the yanme. I mean, they've always kinda been an oddball species, and like, in the games I never got quite attached to them, they were always just large crowds of annoying little buggers (see what I did there slightly? UK). I didn't even know they had multiple ranks and stuff. But I was reading into them on halopedian and the amount of backstory was Really interesting, and the race As a whole was a lot more fleshed out and unique than I had thought -- like even down to the way in which they communicate with the rest of the convenient army is unique and interesting.
And yet I feel like the san Shyuum, sanghellie, and jiralhannae cultures get a lot of thought. But nobody ever talks about the drones... So I don't know what, if anything, you could do with it, but I thought I'd bring it up...

Edit: this is a weird post  :P
Title: Re: Suggestions
Post by: Postmortem on February 16, 2012, 05:31:41 AM
I've kinda been interested in exploring their sociology and history more as well, however I feel that our understanding of the Drones is still too incomplete to allow for an accurate representation at this point. However, there is one thing that I feel would change that... and that would be if we finally got to see a queen in a game. I thought we were going to get to see this in ODST when I first trudged through that hive, but was disappointed that that was all we got to see.
So I'll make you a deal. If a queen shows up in a game, I'll write this article.

Than it is done! And, judging from the way things seem to be going, You will probably never write an article  :P

Is there any way to get a chat box in the forum section for members that are online?

Yep, me too. It's better than clogging up a single thread with back and forth discussion.

Eh, it's useful but I do like having a record of discussions. I've never seen a system for logging a chatbox on a website before.

I was talking about using it for less serious stuff though, like, just talkng about stuff... Not like, discussing serious points... That why we have the forums...

And I have seen a system that archives the chat logs really well...
Title: Re: Suggestions
Post by: Slightly Live on March 23, 2012, 11:56:57 PM
I thought about a chat add on to the forums here but it always looks messy and cluttered and takes from the clean, polished presentation, never mind that it would encourage new members not to post but instead to chat, not something we'd want to encourage.

Maybe I'll take another look at the feature in future since you guys have asked but right now I don't think we're going to see it anytime soon.

How about countdown clocks for all of the Halo goodies coming out within the next 5 months?

Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn
Halo: Glass Harder, I mean, The Thursday War
Halo 4
Halo: Silentium

Hmmmm.... That would require a lot of work on the part of the staff here... So i doubt it will ever happen ;D

Very funny. =P

The problem with countdowns is where to put them.
Title: Re: Suggestions

Homepage, under the newly added links (twitter, forums, etc.) or on the side bar of the homepage maybe?

And if you think it might work better, maybe you could just do one countdown with the title coming out first and then reset it to the next title when the original countdown ends.
Title: Re: Suggestions
Post by: Tar Alacrin on August 24, 2012, 05:21:51 PM
Actually, he has a point; Right now, I think the top bar with all the links is already way crowded...

Although i suppose the top top right might be ok... But then you might suffer from just too much stuff going on in a small space
Title: Re: Suggestions
Post by: Sixftunder on August 24, 2012, 09:05:44 PM
We can agree to disagree; I don't think there is too much on there now, and I don't think adding a countdown clock would clutter it up. It's not like it would be interactive like a link, it would just be there. It might seem like a lot to someone new to the site.

To be honest, I have the forum homepage open all the time on my home computer, and I only go to the actual FuD homepage when I see a new article is up via a new thread about it in the forums, but I will probably hear about them first now through Twitter, so that's why I really love having a FuD Twitter. So for me, it would be more of an incentive to visit the homepage more often, although I don't expect the staff to do something just for me, but I do think it would be a good addition to the site in general.

Anyway, it was just a thought.

Nice to know that we're heading towards the Halo.bungie.org world of "there's a front page"?
Title: Re: Suggestions
Post by: Sixftunder on August 25, 2012, 09:26:21 PM
Just being honest. I love every aspect of this site, it's just that the forums are my favorite part because I look forward to reading new thoughts and speculations to both items I have brought up and those brought up by the rest of the community. When I am aware of a new article, it's not like I push it off for a while; I read it straight away! It's just that the homepage contains a lot of stuff that I have already seen or read before, and frankly as a "Veteran" member, I don't have a whole lot of use for it, and I in no way mean that with any disrespect. I think the homepage does a great job of enticing someone new to the site to poke around and enjoy all of the fantastic content, and then hopefully, join us in the forums  :D

At the end of the day, what is the point of this site? (i.e. my favorite business question, what are you in the business of doing?) This is a website dedicated to "take a deeper look beneath the surface of Halo" and I love that the "mission statement" is essentially the first thing you see on the website. So, the staff creates well-written and thought-provoking articles that we, as the "consumers'" can't get enough of - hence the constant heckling from us for new content (I still haven't forgotten about the Reach datapads part 3 that we were promised almost a year ago  :o).

I personally understand how hard it can be just to formulate and actually write out ideas for original Halo content that hasn't been covered and beaten to death with speculation on other sites, as I have my own folder of ideas and articles that just never made it for one reason or the other. So with the understandable slow turn-around of new content, the members turn to the forums to discuss things and create our own content that the staff can comment on as well (and hopefully gather ideas for new content of their own as well).

That is my view of why the forums are such an essential part of this community; it is the other half of the "mission statement" where members can take that deeper look beneath the surface by raising questions that they had about the universe but didn't know where to ask before coming here and where they aren't afraid of being ridiculed by "Halo lore professionals" for not knowing the answer. Is it really so bad to think that the homepage is there just to draw people in and eventually make it to the forums which is like the end-point you wish to get new members, and then return to the homepage for new staff content? I know a lot of hard work went into the homepage, and I would hate for any of the staff to think that we as members don't appreciate it, but again, this is just my honest opinion, review, fan feedback, or whatever you would like to call it.

Sorry for the business view of it (and length), but I have to put this college education to work, or else I wasted all of that money that wasn't mine in the first place.

Speaking of the mission statement I have a dark secret that I have withheld for so long. Today, that secret will be revealed...

There's a typo in the first line and it's driving me crazy. It says "Every second of every day 'somenody' somewhere is playing Halo."

I don't know who somenody is but he needs to get a hold of his addiction.

Oh and I don't know if I've said it before but the homepage looks beautiful by the way. Amazing job on that.

Well met Six! Cheerio! I Agree most heartily!

Although, TBH, I use the actual fud homepage as one of my homepages... And then I go and press the forum button... Cause it is soooooo easy, and I'm not Exeedingly lazy that i cant just make that jump ;D
