So, yeah, after years of talking nonsense about certain sci-fi franchises, I've decided to write my own.

My friend and I are the creative masterminds (lol) behind Light Echoes, a machinima made in Space Engineers (mostly).

I must admit, of my limited internet circles, I'm most nervous about showing it to you guys because a.) I know you know your shit and b.) you're mostly likely to potentially see where I'm going with things having read my previous diatribes.

Episode 1 is up, episode 2 should wrap this week sometime. Season 1 will be six episodes.

Think part Red Dwarf, part Red vs Blue, part Stargate, but with 200% more Australians.

Anyway. Here it is.

*cough*

  • There has been much talk. And i have listened...
Your accents are adorable...

I enjoyed it though!
Not at all what I expected. And I have no idea whats happening, but I supposed thats to be expected somewhat in the first episode.

Excited to see where it goes.

That's ok, the characters don't either.

Saw both episodes, I thought it was pretty solid. 'Murican comment here that I sometimes found it difficult to tell who was who; I'd also recommend compressing and/or normalizing y'alls voices because they tended to get lost in the background sometimes.

I felt the first episode dragged a bit, and there are points in both where it seems just like things weren't tightly edited, as opposed to deliberately long sequences. The computer was just really hard for me to understand half the time (partially because they're making "nonsensical" responses, it made it hard to naturally parse things). I think things were better by the second episode because there was less dead air, and you had a fun interplay of the two characters.

Definitely looking forward to more episodes :) What game(s) are you using to record?

Learning as we go. The first episode has a lot of establishment. I was worried about the opposite problem, that the second episode was too talky and not enough action lol.

Space Engineers is the main game. We used BeamNG.Drive and 7 Days to Die for the dream sequences, and Kerbal Space Program for the solar system map. Got a few other ideas in the pipeline. We've got a fairly good green screen set up for Space Engineers, so we can hopefully squeeze in a lot of unexpected footage to widen our potential shooting options.

Apparently even one of my IRL friends had trouble telling us apart too. We're trying to use framing and characterisation as workarounds.

The computer is a trade off, its already been edited to make it more understandable, but while the characters don't understand it I don't thinks its too huge a problem for it to be hard to understand. It is making a kind of sense. There is a formula to its dialog. Except for the new language setting, its complete nonsense lol.

If/when we need actual functional communication with the computer, we'll probably upgrade it to a real voice of some kind.

Cool. I'd never heard of Space Engineers until you mentioned it in the OP, and I've never heard of the additional games.

Kerbal Space program is amazing, especially if you're into rocketry, space exploration, etc etc.

Plan is six episodes for season one, thinking twelve episodes for season two.

No particular schedule is set, but the overall plot for season one is in place.

Just added subtitles to episode #1, so if the Australian is hurting the brain, or you want to have a better crack at translating the computer, its all there.
